California hospitals are being forced to close down from unpaid bills in large illegal Hispanic populations. Hospitals with emergency rooms are forced to accept any patient that comes in for treatment, whether they are able to pay or not because of mandatory U.S. Federal law.In recent years, unpaid bills run up by illegal immigrants forced a number of hospitals to close. Recently the Los Angeles Times listed 61 California hospitals that were forced to close their emergency rooms since 2001.
The federal government directs emergency rooms to accept all patients regardless of their condition. Hospitals want to be reimbursed for unpaid patients bills. The hospitals are now seeking compensation as many illegal aliens use emergency rooms instead of doctor’s office for minor treatment for colds, fevers or skin scratch.
Hospitals and medical providers in California recently urged President Obama to work with Congress for reimbursements for the cost of treating illegal immigrants. Federal law requires facilities to “treat and stabilize individuals” regardless of their alien immigration status. Essentially there’s no federal support for hospitals seeking cost for services rendered from either federal, state or local levels of government. Illegal Immigration in the U.S. is treated at the federal level.
Americans are spending massive yearly to provide free medical care for illegal immigrants with states like California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas that border Mexico taking the sizeablehit. This has expanded across the entire nation adding billions in cost. Nationwide, the U.S. taxpayers spend tens of billions of dollars annually to provide free medical care for illegal immigrants. Adding to the problem is the fact that Mexico, the country that provides the largest amount of illegal immigrants in the U.S., has long promoted America’s public health centers. It even operates a Spanish language program “Ventanillas de Salud, Health Windows” in about two dozen U.S. cities that refers its nationals living in the country illegally to public funded health centers where they can get free medical care without being turned over to immigration authorities.
Recently California, the largest cluster of illegal immigrants, pleafor federal compensation after disclosingthat hospitals in the state spend about $1.25 billion annually to treat illegal aliens, which has since risen. The problem will only get worse, according to officials, who say the $1.25 billion for 2010 could actually be higher. The complain that federal law dictates hospitals and medical providers are forced to treat patients in emergency rooms in spite of immigration status as they get stuck with the financial cost.
Not much will be done because of the 2012 election cycle as President Obama will be seeking the Hispanic votes for his reelectioncampaign. The federal government and Congresshave encouraged illegals to partake of entitlements freebies at no cost. Obama stated in 2010, changes to existing immigration laws were forthcoming in 2010. Don’t expect any financial compensation from the federal government.
