Unemployed former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first refused to stand during The Star-Spangled Banner last year in August of 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. Since then, many NFL and former players have refused to stand for the national anthem. The protests have generated controversy and sparked conversation for what the player did not consider an issue in high school and college but choose to do so now because they are outright ignorant, plain facts.
Refusing to stand for the national anthem, NFL athletes are using their celebrity status to bring attention to issues when politics has no place on the playing field especially when those players, ninety-two percent of African American football players in the NFL do not cast a single vote in any Local, State, or National election. Refusing to stand for the national anthem is an inappropriate and ineffective method of protesting any cause.
Engage in political protest just because these players have a social media account, they think they have a so-called platform to shows disrespect to the country and those who proudly support what the Anthem stands for. Refusing to stand for the national anthem shows disrespect for the American Flag, members of the military, law enforcement, mainly the many Armed Forced veterans that fought and died protecting our soil.
It really sucks that the NFL and it’s billion dollar revenue drawing entity would allowing the players to dishonor the flag of this country and the national anthem when we have young men and women overseas fighting and died for this county.
Disrespecting the flag that has given these African American player’s the freedom to speak out when they had no opposition in Pop Warner, high school and collegiate sports. Refusing to stand for the national anthem has angered many and plant racial division in our country.
President Trump was right to scold the league for not standing behind the National Anthem, that kneeling during the Anthem is not acceptable. The NFL, its players making black people look self serving.
